How To Give Back As A Small Business or Entrepreneur

Generosity is one of AwayTeam’s core values, and our late COO Louisa Tew was the biggest advocate of giving back, no matter how big or small.

‘Tis the season, as many have probably heard in the past couple of days, along with Christmas carols and holiday cheer. It’s that time of year when everyone seems a little more cheerful than usual, more than ready to give or lend a helping hand.

Being generous is something that has positive effects not just on the recipients, but on the givers as well. This claim is backed up by science! According to research, even the thought of spending money in order to give a present has made the participants feel happier. Making generosity a part of your daily life also has long-term benefits in one’s overall health, well-being, and even life expectancy.

And contrary to what many people believe, generosity isn’t limited to big corporations and industry giants that have huge capital and profit. Yes, small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs can experience the joy of giving and all it takes is a bit of creativity.

Here are some ways you can give back and not deplete your own resources.

Go beyond cash

Things that we can give aren’t limited to cash or material things. If you offer a particular service, why not offer them for free to a charitable organization, for instance? You can also set up a free courses or broadcast a webinar where your community can consult with you and ask for advice.

Goods can be given in the form of donations to the underprivileged and less fortunate groups in your area. Another idea is to create a line of products, or sell some of your existing items specifically to fund a charity or cause.

Give your time

If it’s possible, organize a volunteering event for your team to participate in. You can partner with an environmental org to plant trees or join clean-up drives; maybe distribute food to the homeless, or help out at an orphanage or a women’s shelter. The possibilities are endless!

Your time to bring happiness to other people and bring an improvement in their lives is just as valuable than money could bring. Plus, events like these can build your working relationships and make them stronger.

Encourage philanthropy

Empower your staff to give back by incorporating the values of generosity and altruism from the very beginning, in your mission, vision and core beliefs. Incorporate these in the way you do business and interact with your clients. Ask your team what causes or advocacies they’re passionate about, and have them look for opportunities that your company can help.

Organise a charity drive

Make use of your network of clients, followers, fans and community members and hold a drive on behalf of a nonprofit. Request for donations in cash or in kind, and make sure to document every phase of your event for transparency purposes. In turn, you can give freebies to donors, as a way of expressing your own gratitude for their support.

Be vocal about a cause

Be active online and on your official social media accounts, and ask your team members to do the same too! Talk about your cause, and start conversations with people. Share campaign pages and events, your favorite non-profit/charities’ websites, and who knows how far your post can reach.

No effort is too small or insignificant when it comes to being generous. When combined, these ‘little’ efforts can make a whole big difference and impact, bringing more warm fuzzy feelings during this yuletide season.
